Nepal has pioneered a new model of local equity participation in hydropower development, where project-affected communities have a constitutional right to invest in the companies developing these projects. This practice has helped foster community ownership and support, mitigating the risk of project disruptions. However, the implementation of this innovative approach has been uneven, presenting both benefits and challenges. This study examines the Nepali local shares phenomenon, evaluating its potential to deliver equitable outcomes for communities as well as identifying areas where significant improvement is still needed.
